FAQs
Am I Really Pregnant?
If you’ve missed your period or are experiencing symptoms like nausea, fatigue, or breast tenderness, you might be pregnant—but the only way to know for sure is through medical-grade pregnancy testing and an ultrasound. At Women’s Care Center Milwaukee, we offer free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to confirm if you’re pregnant and determine how far along you are. It’s completely confidential, and no insurance is required.
How Long Will My Appointment Take?
Most appointments at our clinic take about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the services you need. If you’re coming in for a pregnancy test and ultrasound, we’ll take the time to explain your results, answer your questions, and provide one-on-one support. We want you to feel heard and informed—not rushed.
Do I Need to Bring Anything to My Appointment?
No, you don’t need to bring anything with you—just yourself. If you have a photo ID, that can be helpful, but it’s not required. Everything at Women’s Care Center Milwaukee is free and confidential, so there’s no need for insurance or payment.
Can I Bring a Guest to My Appointment?
Yes, you are welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member with you. We know that having someone by your side can make the experience more comfortable. However, if you prefer to come alone, that’s perfectly fine too. Your privacy and comfort are our top priorities.
What Can I Expect at My Appointment?
When you arrive at our Milwaukee center, you’ll be greeted warmly and taken to a private room. After a brief intake, we’ll provide a free pregnancy test, and if it’s positive, an ultrasound may be offered to confirm viability and gestational age. You’ll have the chance to speak with a caring counselor who will listen to your concerns and answer any questions about your options—without pressure or judgment.
Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an important part of confirming your pregnancy. It shows whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, whether there is a heartbeat, and how far along you are. This information is essential regardless of your pregnancy decision. Our ultrasounds are offered completely free and performed by trained medical professionals.
How Much Will My Appointment Cost?
All of our services are at no cost to you.
Our priority is that you receive the skilled medical care and support you need when you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy.
I’m Under 18. Do You Have to Tell My Parents?
No, you do not need parental permission to receive services at our clinic. Your appointment is completely confidential, even if you’re a minor. We’re here to provide a safe, supportive space for you to get the help you need.
Could I Be Pregnant & Have An STI/STD?
Yes, it’s possible to be pregnant and have a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Many STDs don’t show symptoms at first, but they can affect your health and your pregnancy. That’s why we recommend STD testing as part of your overall care. While we do not currently provide STD testing at this location, we can refer you to trusted medical partners in the Milwaukee area.
Are You a Medical Clinic?
Yes, Women’s Care Center Milwaukee is a licensed medical clinic. Our team includes registered nurses and trained medical professionals who provide free pregnancy confirmation services, ultrasounds, and educational support. We are committed to giving you medically accurate information in a safe, respectful environment.
Abortion Pill In-Depth
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the abortion pill through 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy. A medical/chemical abortion procedure uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The first medication ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. This causes the fetal heart to stop and the pregnancy to detach from the uterine lining. Up to 48 hours later, the second medication is taken, which causes strong uterine cramping to expel the embryo/fetus and pregnancy tissue.
Before Taking The Abortion Pill
We recommend scheduling a pregnancy screening and ultrasound appointment for your health and safety.
A pregnancy screening appointment is critical because it reduces risk to your health and equips you with information unique to you and your pregnancy so you can make a fully informed decision.
A pregnancy screening appointment includes time with our licensed medical staff, a medical-grade pregnancy test, a limited obstetrical ultrasound, and STI/STD testing. The four essential purposes for this appointment are:
- Confirming that you have a viable pregnancy.
- Determining gestational age and available options.
- Testing to be sure you don’t have an STI (sexually transmitted infection).
- Supporting you and answering all of your questions.
To protect your emotional, psychological, and physical health, before proceeding with an abortion it is important to have all the information mentioned above.
Side Effects and Risks
The most common side effects of a surgical abortion include:
- Bleeding and passing blood clots
- Intense cramping
- Nausea and vomiting
- Feeling faint/sweating
Complications of a surgical abortion include:
- Severe infection
- Damage to the cervix or uterus
- Excessive bleeding
Unplanned Pregnancy Options
Abortion
If you are considering abortion, there are a few abortion types available, including surgical abortions and medication (or the abortion pill). The cost of an abortion and the availability of each will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Our team will help you to understand the facts about your abortion options, abortion side effects, and abortion risks.
While we do not perform or refer women for elective abortions, we are here to provide the judgment-free care you need so you can make the best decision possible for you. We do offer a free pre-abortion screening for women who are considering this option.

Abortion Types
There are two types of abortion procedures: medical/chemical abortion and surgical abortion. The type of procedure women undergo depends on how far along they are in their pregnancy, health status, and ability to access emergency/follow-up care.
Surgical Abortion
A surgical abortion is a medical procedure that ends your pregnancy. If a woman is more than 10 weeks into her pregnancy and is not eligible for the abortion pill, or in the event of a medication abortion failure, a surgical abortion may have to be performed.

How Far Along Am I?
Pregnancy Ultrasound
Even if you’ve had a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is important. An ultrasound helps provide valuable information you need to make your pregnancy decision with confidence.
An ultrasound, often referred to as a sonogram, uses high frequency sound waves to display images from inside the body. This helps determine gestational age, whether this is an intrauterine pregnancy, and if there is cardiac activity. Whether you planned this pregnancy or are exploring abortion, this information is vital to understanding your options.

Information that Empowers You to Make Decisions.
What is a Pre-Abortion Screening?
Pre-abortion screening is a series of essential medical steps taken before an abortion can safely be performed. This screening typically includes a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, and sometimes STD testing. The goal is to confirm whether you’re truly pregnant, determine how far along you are, and identify any potential health concerns—such as an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage—that would require a different type of medical care. Pre-abortion screening ensures that you receive the right information and medical attention before making any decision.
At Women’s Care Center Milwaukee we offer pre-abortion screening at no cost—including lab-quality pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds. While we do not perform or refer for abortions, we believe every woman deserves accurate, timely information in a compassionate, judgment-free space. Knowing your exact gestational age, pregnancy viability, and overall health status is critical for protecting your well-being. Whether you’re considering abortion or still exploring your options, we’re here to make sure you have the answers and support you need to make an informed choice.
What if I Have an Ectopic Pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus—most commonly in one of the fallopian tubes. This type of pregnancy is not viable and can become a serious medical emergency if left untreated. If you’re experiencing sharp abdominal pain, shoulder pain, lightheadedness, or heavy bleeding, you should seek medical care immediately. An ectopic pregnancy cannot continue and requires urgent treatment to protect your health and future fertility.
The only way to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy is through a confirmation ultrasound, which is why this step is so important if you think you might be pregnant. We offer free limited ultrasounds to determine where the pregnancy is located, how far along you are, and whether a heartbeat is present. While we do not treat ectopic pregnancies, our medical staff can provide early detection and guide you to the appropriate care right away.
It is important to know that the abortion pill is not effective at treating an ectopic pregnancy, and it could potentially lead to serious harm if consumed while experiencing an ectopic pregnancy.
Am I Pregnant?
If you’ve missed a period or are experiencing symptoms like nausea, fatigue, or breast tenderness, you may be wondering: am I really pregnant? It’s a common to wonder, especially if your cycle is irregular or you’ve had a recent change in stress, weight, or routine. While these signs can point to pregnancy, they can also be caused by other factors. The only way to know for sure is through a medical-grade pregnancy test and an ultrasound.
We offer free, lab-quality pregnancy tests that are more accurate than many over-the-counter options. If your test is positive, we’ll also provide a free limited ultrasound to confirm whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, determine viability and find out how far along you are. This information is essential—whether you’re considering parenting, adoption, or abortion. You don’t have to guess or go through this alone. Our compassionate team is here to walk with you, answer your questions, and make sure you have the clarity and care you deserve.
Decided to Have an Abortion Already?
If you’ve already decided to have an abortion, we want you to know that you are still welcome here. At Women’s Care Center Milwaukee, we exist to support women at every stage of decision-making—whether you’re still weighing your options or feel like your mind is made up. Even if you feel certain, it’s important to pause and make sure you have all the information you need, including how far along you are, the type of abortion procedure that would apply, and the potential physical and emotional risks.
Before any abortion, an ultrasound is a critical first step. It confirms that the pregnancy is viable (not a miscarriage), determines how far along you are, and rules out an ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious medical condition that the abortion pill cannot treat. We offer free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and medically accurate information so you can move forward with clarity and confidence. While we do not perform or refer for abortions, we are here to provide compassionate care, answer your questions, and make sure you are truly informed—because your health and well-being matter.
Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms (Physical)
Missed period (amenorrhea) – For women who have regular menstrual cycles, if your period is one week late or more, you might be pregnant. This pregnancy symptom is not a reliable sign of pregnancy if you have irregular cycles.
Tender or swollen breasts – In early pregnancy, the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin are elevated and often make the breasts/nipples sore due to tissue swelling.
Nausea with or without vomiting – Morning sickness or all-day sickness usually begins 1–2 months after conception.
Increased urination – Due to the increased amount of blood in your body during pregnancy, your kidneys will have to process extra fluid that ends up as urine in your bladder, leading to more frequent urination.
Fatigue – Fatigue is a very common early symptom of pregnancy.
Additional Symptoms (Hormonal & Digestive)
Moodiness – Mood swings including being emotional and weepy are common due to the rush of hormones in early pregnancy.
Bloating – These hormonal changes can also make you feel bloated like you may feel at the start of a menstrual period.
Light spotting – Spotting can be caused by implantation bleeding and happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, about 2 weeks after conception.
Mild cramping – Mild, period-like cramps can be normal in early pregnancy.
Constipation – Your digestive system can slow down due to hormonal changes, leading to constipation.
Food aversions – Foods you usually enjoy might not be appealing, and you may be more sensitive to certain odors.
Options Counseling
Options counseling is a safe, supportive conversation designed to help you explore all your pregnancy options—parenting, adoption, and abortion—in a non-judgmental environment. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused, or unsure what to do next, options counseling gives you the chance to talk with a professional who will listen, ask thoughtful questions, and help you process your thoughts and emotions. It’s not about telling you what to do—it’s about equipping you with information and clarity so you can make a decision that feels right for you.
Our options counseling is always free and confidential. We take the time to walk through each option, answer your questions honestly, and talk about your concerns—whether they’re emotional, practical, or health-related. You’ll never be pressured or judged. Our counselors are here to support you, no matter your circumstances, and to ensure that you leave feeling heard, respected, and more confident in your next step. Whether you’re considering abortion, unsure about parenting, or exploring adoption, we’re here for you.
